Mo Money March Spending Detox
Chris and I are doing a month long spending detox for March, inspired by Cait Flanders’ book, “The Year of Less: How I Stopped Shopping, Gave Away My Belongings, and Discovered Life Is Worth More Than Anything You Can Buy in a Store.”
After digging herself out of $30k worth of consumer debt, Cait chronicles her year of buying only necessities like groceries and gas for her car. She also manages to free herself of over half her belongings in the process, and explores consumerism through the lens of a former binge drinker.
In March, we’re aiming to spend on only the basics of (our) life. We’ve set some ground rules for banned and approved spending to help guide us through the month. I’ll diary every bit of daily spending, including groceries and gas, but won’t include recurring monthly expenses like the mortgage, insurance, or our gym/yoga studio memberships.

- Delivery/fast food/takeout coffee/restaurants*
- We have plenty to read
*I’m travelling to Washington, DC for business at the end of the month and will allow myself meals and coffees on that trip.
- Cleaning supplies and home maintenance
- Gas & maintenance on car
- Health & pharmacy, prescriptions
- Recreation & exercise
- Outdoor activities
I’ll be posting period updates about our March spending – including triggers that may have otherwise led us to spend on something unnecessary.
